The Rafaelo® Procedure

Hemorrhoids are among the most common complaints in daily practice. However, the treatment options have evolved significantly in recent years, making it not always easy to clearly inform patients about their options or to refer them at the right time. In addition to classical techniques such as rubber band ligation and hemorrhoidectomy, minimally invasive treatments are rapidly gaining ground.

The Rafaelo® procedure is one such minimally invasive technique. It utilizes radiofrequency thermocoagulation to control the shrinkage of the vascular tissue of internal hemorrhoids. The treatment typically takes place on an outpatient basis and aims for rapid relief of symptoms such as bleeding and prolapse.

In this training, we will first refresh the basic knowledge: anatomy, causes, symptoms, grading, and prevention of hemorrhoids. You will then receive an overview of the traditional and surgical treatment options by grade, allowing you to properly situate the place of Rafaelo® within the current treatment offerings.

We will then delve deeper into the science behind radiofrequency therapy: what it is, how it differs from electrocauterization, and which phases of thermocoagulation occur. You will go through the procedure step by step, from indications and contraindications to patient preparation and the actual execution. Clinical evidence and the benefits for both patients and healthcare providers will also be extensively covered.

Finally, we will focus on aftercare, follow-up, and patient communication, with clear guidelines on when referral is indicated. After this training, you will be able to clearly explain the Rafaelo® procedure to patients, recognize the appropriate indications, and contribute to safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
